GRAIN – Quality and condition, risks and responsibilities
Pamela Kirby Johnson OBE, Director General,The Grain & Feed Trade Association, U.K.
Countries that are successfully integrating into the global trading system have shown they enjoy faster growth, better living standards, and higher productivity, but with all change there will be transitional problems of adaptation and one of the features are logistics; bringing the goods to the export point in a satisfactory quality and good condition for shipping.
There are a number of risks in trading. The risk of the goods, the shipment risks as well as documentary risks. It is a feature of shipping that it depends upon a variety of commercial activities. Frequently in relation to dry bulk cargoes there may be issues at the load port over the precise quality and quantity of cargo loaded, or over its condition. There may be differences between sampling, analyses tests and measurements from shore scales and a master's draft survey.
The need for goods to comply with their contractual quality provisions is highly important. Gafta provides standard forms of contracts and supporting rules to complement the essential elements of the trades, (price, quantity, time and place of shipment/delivery and quality) and sets down the means and methods by which a contract is to be performed.
There are a numbers of tests to determine the suitability of goods which can be discussed, such as fitness for all purposes for which goods of the kind in question are commonly supplied, appearance and finish, freedom from minor defects as well as safety.
